Making Online Gaming More Real

Did you ever get the feeling that online gaming was just not enough? Or that it lacks some of the "live" aspects of traditional brick and mortar casinos? The answer just might be live dealer games.

The concept is already a few years old, but recent developments have made live gaming a much better experience than the first attempts at it a few years ago. First of all, though, a brief digression on live gaming and its differences to traditional online gaming is in order.

The Live Difference
Live dealers add a whole new dimension to the casino experience. Traditional online gaming, which I will refer to as RNG gaming (after the Random Number Generator that is used to generate the game results) is a simulation of casino games. While it is true that a properly written simulation will exhibit all of the random properties of a live version of the game, some people just feel more comfortable with "the real thing."

In traditional online gaming, you play by yourself, and after a while, the experience may get tiresome. There is no interactivity with the dealer. Some casino providers have tried to overcome this by adding chat rooms to their games. Cryptologic is an excellent example of this, and they have been quite successful with it.

However, even with chat in the games, many players, especially high rollers, feel that the game is missing something. Of course that something is the dealer.

The Live Difference
When you decide to take the plunge into live gaming, be prepared for something different. If you are familiar with RNG gaming, you have become accustomed to fast action. In Live games, the software companies have deemphasized speed in favor of realism (although they do still make an effort to keep it as fast paced as possible).

What you get in return though, is the ability to chat, not only with the live dealer, but with other players at your table. You can see their cards and decisions, and the game takes on a new life. For many people, there's no going back. Many sites post schedules showing which dealers are dealing which games at specific times. Operators report that many players have favorite dealers, and will only play with them, or even request them at odd times. Well run casinos can often accommodate these requests.

Generally, you'll find friendly people at the tables, and the dealers are always happy to chat with you. They seem to enjoy the chat as well, since it breaks up the monotony of dealing cards all day.

What you can play
Live casinos generally offer blackjack, roulette, baccarat, with some offering additional games. Games in which you are required to make strategy decisions, such as blackjack, often have high table minimums, limited availability of seating at the table, or do not allow fun play. This is because these games require the dealers to deal individual cards to each of the players and wait for their decisions, which can be costly for operators to maintain. In the case of game such as roulette and baccarat, all of the players share the same game, so these limitations generally will not apply.

System Requirements
Today's live dealer games are developed to keep the system requirements to a minimum. In order to play, you'll need an internet connection of 56k or better, and virtually any PC running Windows 98 or higher. Video quality is still not broadcast quality, but the cards are usually easy to read. And, developers are rapidly making progress in improving video performance.

Casino Management
The casino management server provides the tools to the casino managers and customer service representatives for daily operations. It interfaces with the Database Server to generate reports, as well as the information customer service representatives need to handle customer inquiries. In many cases, this machine will be combined with either the Database Server or the Web Server. The load on this server is generally light, since the Database Server does most of the real work.
